West Mercia Police responded to a report of a man armed with a knife at a property in Fownhope Close, Redditch, Worcestershire, at approximately 2 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Police negotiators attempted to resolve the situation through "several hours" of dialogue. However, at 7:40 p.m., the man was shot by armed officers and pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m., authorities confirmed.
No one else was present in the property during the incident.
A mandatory referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), and an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting is underway.
