Three leading tech firms—OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle have joined forces to launch a groundbreaking company, Stargate, aimed at revolutionising AI infrastructure across the United States.
The announcement was made at the White House on Tuesday by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son, Oracle Chairman Larry Ellison, and President Donald Trump.
President Trump hailed Stargate as the “largest AI infrastructure project in history.” The initiative will kick off with a $100 billion investment, with plans to scale up to $500 billion in the coming years. According to Trump, the project is expected to create 100,000 jobs in the US.
Stargate's mission is to build the “physical and virtual infrastructure to power the next generation of AI,” which includes constructing advanced data centres across the nation. Ellison confirmed that construction is already underway on the first facility, a massive 1-million-square-foot data centre in Texas.
The project addresses urgent calls from AI leaders for expanded infrastructure to support the growing demands of artificial intelligence, including chips, electricity, and water resources.
Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, emphasized the significance of the project, calling it “the most important project of this era.” He also acknowledged President Trump's role, stating, “We wouldn’t be able to do this without you, Mr. President.”
Oracle, one of the largest data centre operators in the US, and SoftBank, known for its financial resources, bring the necessary expertise and funding to this ambitious venture.
