A small number of Coca-Cola, Sprite, and Appletiser cans have been recalled in the UK after overseas testing detected high levels of chlorate, a chemical by-product of chlorine disinfectants.
The recall affects specific batches of Coca-Cola Original Taste, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Diet Coke, and Sprite Zero, which were only distributed to cafes and restaurants for a limited time. Affected products also include 6x250ml multipacks of Appletiser sent to UK supermarkets.
The issue was first identified in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, prompting Coca-Cola Europacific Partners to remove impacted products from shelves. The affected cans have production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE, which can be found on the base of the can.
Chlorate, a by-product of chlorine-based sanitisers, can contribute to iodine deficiency and is subject to legal residue limits in food.
However, independent analysis concluded that the risk of temporary illness from consuming these drinks is very low.
Coca-Cola Europacific Partners assured consumers that the majority of its UK products, including standard cans and all glass and plastic bottles, are unaffected.
The company has been in discussions with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and apologised for the issue, stating that a "small number of our products have not met our high standards."
Customers with affected cans are advised to contact Coca-Cola’s customer service at 0800 227711 for assistance.
