Labour Party Suspends Amesbury after Video Showed Him Punching Man

October 27, 2024

Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been suspended by his party following CCTV footage showing him physically assaulting a man on the street.

In the video, obtained by MailOnline, Amesbury, the MP for Runcorn and Helsby, appears to punch a man who then falls to the ground, with Amesbury allegedly continuing to strike him. Bystanders intervened shortly after.

The Labour Party’s suspension of Amesbury comes as Cheshire Police investigate the incident. A police spokesperson confirmed that a 55-year-old man, identified as Amesbury, had been interviewed voluntarily under caution and was released while inquiries continue.

Amesbury defended his actions in a statement, claiming he had felt “threatened on the street following an evening out with friends” and reported the incident himself to the police.

The video had also circulated on social media, showing Amesbury speaking to the man on the ground, stating, “you won’t ever threaten me again.”

Both Labour and Conservative representatives have called for a thorough investigation, with the Labour Party confirming Amesbury’s cooperation. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson noted that it is now a police matter, and Amesbury has agreed to assist with their inquiries.
