Protests broke out on Sunday night in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota after police fatally shot a black man after stopping his vehicle for a traffic violation about 10 miles from Downtown Minneapolis, where George Floyd was killed by a police officer during an arrest last year.
Hundreds of protestors gathered around the Brooklyn Center Police Department Headquarters on Sunday night as police officers in riot gear retaliated by firing rubber bullets and flashbangs, NBC News reported.
According to the New York Times, The gathering had largely been peaceful up until 9.30 pm local time when the police made an announcement declaring the gathering was unlawful and gave the crowd 10 minutes to disperse.
The man killed by police was identified by his relatives and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as 20-year-old Daunte Wright.
In a statement, the police said officers pulled over a driver for a traffic violation at 2 pm local time on Sunday and discovered that he had an outstanding warrant.
The driver was shot after he re-entered the vehicle while the officers were trying to arrest him, following which the car travelled several blocks and crashed into another vehicle, the police statement claimed.
Katie Wright, the driver’s mother, told reporters at the scene that police had pulled Wright over for having air fresheners dangling from his rear-view mirror— which is illegal in Minnesota.
