The demand for AI jobs and artificial intelligence careers has surged since ChatGPT’s launch in late 2022. A study by the University of Maryland and job-tracking firm LinkUp shows artificial intelligence careers are expanding rapidly, highlighting the growing need for AI expertise.
AI job postings have risen 68% in the U.S. since 2022, while overall job listings declined 17%. ZipRecruiter data shows AI job listings grew 124% from 2023 to 2024.
Professor Anil Gupta of the University of Maryland attributes this to the “ChatGPT effect,” as generative AI fuels demand for AI engineers and consultants while reducing traditional IT roles, which have dropped by 27%.
LinkedIn ranks AI engineer and AI consultant as the fastest-growing U.S. jobs. PwC found AI-related roles are expanding over three times faster than the general job market. However, AI automation is also leading to workforce reductions. A World Economic Forum survey found 41% of employers plan to downsize jobs by 2030 due to AI.
Tech companies are already adjusting. Google laid off employees in its Google Assistant and hardware divisions after investing billions in AI startup Anthropic. AI tools like GitHub Copilot now handle 60-70% of coding tasks, reducing the need for human programmers. “Four people can now do the work of ten,” Gupta noted.
The AI competition is heating up worldwide. Chinese AI startup DeepSeek recently introduced a powerful model developed at a fraction of the cost of ChatGPT. DeepSeek’s open-source approach allows businesses to adapt its AI framework, accelerating AI adoption across industries like software, finance, insurance, and manufacturing.
As AI advances, professionals seeking job security should consider upskilling in AI-related fields. With continued growth in AI job opportunities, the sector remains one of the fastest-expanding industries today.
