Tapas Bar Closes in British Town after Workers Experience Racist Abuse

October 13, 2024

A tapas bar in Exeter, La LoLa Tapas Bar, has closed its doors after enduring a barrage of racist abuse and violence, resulting in at least one serious injury. The owners posted a notice in the window explaining that they were forced to shut down due to a physical assault and ongoing threats.

The notice read: “Last Friday we suffered a physical assault with serious injuries. Over the past year, we have filed dozens of complaints of racist attacks and death threats to both the police and our landlord, Exeter City Council, and none of them has done anything to stop this violence. As was to be expected, one person was seriously injured.”

The business will remain closed until the Devon and Cornwall Police or Exeter City Council can ensure the safety of its staff and customers. The closure follows a year of complaints that have reportedly gone unanswered.

Owner Francisco Montes Gomez expressed frustration with the lack of action from the police and council, protesting their handling of crime in the city centre.

ITV reporter Nick Smith shared the news on social media, expressing disbelief that such incidents were occurring in a city he considered to be friendly and tolerant. His post sparked reactions questioning the state of tolerance in the country.

This incident comes amidst broader concerns about rising tensions, as anti-immigration protests erupted across the UK in August following a separate tragic event in Southport.
