On Sunday morning, a 5G mast on Manchester Road in Ashton-Under-Lyne burst into flames, causing major disruptions in the area.
The fire, which ignited around 4 a.m., led fire crews and police to rush to the scene, where they blocked off a section of the road to contain the situation. Photos from the scene show the mast severely damaged, charred, and surrounded by debris.
The incident caused significant traffic delays throughout Sunday as Manchester Road remained closed westbound, impacting the surrounding area from Ashton-under-Lyne to Denton, which was further congested due to ongoing roadworks and temporary traffic lights on detour routes.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) reported that firefighters from Ashton and Stalybridge responded to the blaze, and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause. The GMFRS spokesperson confirmed that crews remain on-site to secure the area while authorities work to resolve the disruption and restore normal traffic flow.
