Gary Neville Hints at Referee Conspiracy after Man Utd Incident vs West Ham

October 28, 2024

Gary Neville has sparked a Premier League referee conspiracy theory after Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday.

The Hammers were awarded a late, controversial penalty, with Jarrod Bowen scoring to secure the win. The penalty was given after Matthijs De Ligt’s challenge on Danny Ings, with referee David Coote overturning his original decision after VAR official Michael Oliver sent him to review it.

Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, expressed doubts on his podcast, suggesting Coote’s decision was influenced by Oliver. “Coote watched it eight times,” Neville said, “and I don’t think he believed it was a penalty. But when a senior referee sends you to the screen, no one likes to contradict them.”

Neville continued: “Every team gets bad calls, but this one didn’t seem right. De Ligt’s challenge wasn’t reckless; both players went for a bobbling ball, and there wasn’t much in it.”

In the end, Bowen converted the penalty, sealing United’s defeat, leaving Neville unconvinced about the legitimacy of
the call.
