Jia Xin Teo, 22, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 17 years after being convicted of murdering her newborn daughter.
Teo, a Coventry University student, hid her pregnancy and gave birth alone in her halls on March 4. She then placed the baby in a cereal box inside a suitcase, concealing it from her flatmates and family in Malaysia, fearing the impact on her studies.
The crime was uncovered after Teo appeared at a hospital showing signs of recent childbirth, though she initially denied it. When police later searched her accommodation, they found the baby’s body.
During sentencing, Judge Mrs Justice Tipples stated that Teo had planned to conceal and abandon the baby. Teo had claimed to have heard voices instructing her to act, but this was dismissed by the judge.
