Meta plans to cut around 5% of its "lowest performers," potentially impacting approximately 3,600 employees, according to the company. These roles may be backfilled later in the year.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined the move in an internal memo, stating that Meta will now conduct more extensive performance-based layoffs rather than its usual year-long process of managing out underperformers.
The announcement follows a series of major shifts at Meta:
Zuckerberg has defended these changes, claiming they aim to rebuild trust in the platform and reduce excessive content moderation. Critics, however, argue that these shifts may align with efforts to gain favour with President-elect Donald Trump and his administration.
Meta has seen significant workforce reductions in recent years, cutting 11,000 employees in November 2022 and laying off thousands more in 2023.
The company’s pivot reflects not only its evolving strategic priorities but also its response to ongoing public and political scrutiny.
