Meta Targets 5% Workforce Reduction amid Controversial Policy Shifts

Meta plans to cut around 5% of its "lowest performers," potentially impacting approximately 3,600 employees, according to the company. These roles may be backfilled later in the year.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlined the move in an internal memo, stating that Meta will now conduct more extensive performance-based layoffs rather than its usual year-long process of managing out underperformers.

Recent Controversial Changes

The announcement follows a series of major shifts at Meta:

  1. Policy Leadership Restructuring: A prominent Republican was recently appointed to head Meta's policy division.
  2. End of Fact-Checking in the U.S.: The company discontinued its third-party fact-checking programs, with Zuckerberg expressing dissatisfaction over the program’s impact on trust.
  3. Hateful Conduct Policy Updates: Meta adjusted its policies to allow previously banned content, such as derogatory references to women and non-binary individuals.
  4. Termination of DEI Programs: Meta eliminated its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, signaling a strategic pivot.

Zuckerberg has defended these changes, claiming they aim to rebuild trust in the platform and reduce excessive content moderation. Critics, however, argue that these shifts may align with efforts to gain favour with President-elect Donald Trump and his administration.

Context and Layoff History

Meta has seen significant workforce reductions in recent years, cutting 11,000 employees in November 2022 and laying off thousands more in 2023.

The company’s pivot reflects not only its evolving strategic priorities but also its response to ongoing public and political scrutiny.
