Tesla Sales Plunge 40% across Europe amid Growing Elon Musk Backlash

Tesla's car sales dropped by 40% in Europe last month, as political controversy surrounding CEO Elon Musk appears to be damaging the brand.

New industry data covering the EU, UK, and EFTA countries reveals that while electric vehicle (EV) sales overall rose by 26.1%, Tesla’s market share fell from 2.8% to 1.8%, selling fewer than 17,000 cars compared to over 28,000 in February 2024.

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) confirmed that Tesla’s sales are down 42.6% year-to-date in the region. The UK is an exception, with the SMMT reporting a 20% increase in Tesla sales in February compared to last year.

Competition and Controversy Impact Tesla

The drop comes as Chinese EV maker BYD overtook Tesla in global revenue for 2024, despite facing tariffs in both the EU and the US.
Tesla is also struggling with limited new model releases, no low-cost options, and growing competition from cheaper EV brands.

Industry experts point to Elon Musk’s outspoken political views—including his recent support for Germany’s far-right AfD party and a public appearance in a “Trump Was Right about Everything” hat—as a key reason for consumer backlash in Europe.

With EV competition intensifying and brand perception becoming increasingly political, Tesla's European slowdown may signal deeper challenges for the company in 2025.
