Jerome Powell: Supply-chain problems continues to pummel the markets thereby driving up costs and rising prices. Powell insisted any acceleration of the tapering plans would not disrupt financial markets.
Commodity, Oil prices also sank ahead of OPEC's meeting where the cartel may decide on production targets following President Biden's decision to tap the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Crude is now sitting in a bear market, down over 20% from its October highs. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) fell 1.7%, to the $65 per barrel level.
Vaccine makers remain in focus as more intelligence rolls in on the impact omicron may have on the broader global economy. Moderna chairman Noubar Afeyan said, "We really do need to up the level of immunity to the virus," he said. "We need to get the maximum protection possible" he stressed.
European stocks remained hesitant and cautious due to the concern over the surging Covid infections with the German DAX 30 dipping by 0.93% to 15,329.5, France's CAC 40 slipped by 0.60% to 6,840.8 while Britain’s FTSE 100 slipped 0.67% to close at 7,120.79. The region is still battling with the surging Covid infection rate.
Asian stock markets were mixed on Wednesday, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo lost 0.65% to 27,753.37, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong climbed up marginally by 0.55% to 23,788.93 and China's Shanghai Composite Index declined by 0.09% to 3,573.84
