Jerry Hicks, a carpenter from Banner Elk, North Carolina, experienced an unexpected stroke of luck when he found a $20 bill in a convenience store parking lot. With that money, he purchased an Extreme Cash scratch-off lottery ticket, and to his surprise, he won $1 million.
Hicks, who has been a carpenter for 56 years, claimed his prize at the North Carolina Education Lottery Headquarters, opting for a lump sum payout of $600,000, which amounted to $429,007 after taxes. He shared that he plans to use his winnings to support his children and retire.
To celebrate his newfound fortune, Hicks has a simple plan: “We are going to head straight to Golden Corral and eat everything they’ve got,” he said, savouring the moment with family and friends.
