UK seeks to move migrants held on secretive island

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to establish a large-scale migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for undocumented migrants who cannot be deported to their home countries.
The Department of Defence and Homeland Security will prepare 30,000 beds at the naval base. The migrants detained will include those deemed "criminal illegal aliens" or too dangerous to be returned. Trump defended the decision, claiming: "Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them."
The move is expected to face strong opposition from human rights organisations and legal experts. Guantanamo Bay has long been associated with the War on Terror, CIA rendition programs, and torture allegations.
Currently, the detention centre holds only 15 inmates, including Ramzi bin al Shibh, accused of involvement in 9/11. The new expansion would transform the site into one of the largest migrant holding facilities in modern US history.
Critics argue that using Guantanamo for mass migrant detention is a stark symbol of Trump's hardline immigration policies. The White House faces logistical and legal challenges in implementing this move, with concerns over international law violations and humanitarian conditions.
This decision marks a significant escalation in Trump’s immigration agenda as the 2025 presidential term unfolds.https://news.sky.com/
