Archbishop of Canterbury Resigns Over Handling of Child Abuse Case

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby announced his resignation following an investigation revealing his delayed response to a child abuse case.

The inquiry found that Welby had failed to report serial abuse by John Smyth, a church volunteer involved in Christian youth camps, despite being aware of it.

This led to substantial criticism, including from Church officials and victims. Welby stated that stepping down is in the "best interests of the Church," responding to pressure for increased accountability in how the church handles abuse cases.
