Mike Amesbury, the Labour MP for Runcorn and Helsby, has been charged with assault following an alleged incident in Frodsham, Cheshire.
CCTV footage reportedly captured a late-night altercation on October 26, where Amesbury, 55, appeared to punch a 45 years old man.
Following a police investigation and evidence review by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Amesbury faces a charge of common assault under section 39 of the Criminal Justice Act.
The Labour Party suspended Amesbury after the incident, and he now serves as an independent MP. In a statement, he called the incident "deeply regrettable" and confirmed his intention to cooperate fully with law enforcement, though he refrained from further comment due to ongoing legal proceedings.
The CPS has cautioned against sharing or commenting on details of the case online to avoid prejudicing the upcoming court proceedings. The exact date and location of Amesbury's court appearance are yet to be announced.
