The head of GB Energy has admitted that delivering Labour’s promise of 1,000 jobs in Aberdeen could take up to 20 years.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer had pledged that the state-backed green energy initiative—headquartered in northeast Scotland—would help transition workers from oil and gas and could cut consumer energy bills by up to £300.
However, Juergen Maier, the newly appointed chairman of GB Energy, described the project as a “very long-term” endeavour. Speaking in his first broadcast interview, he declined to provide a timeline for when households would see lower energy costs.
"I know you are asking me for a date as to when I can bring that, but GB Energy has only just been created," Maier said. "We will bring energy bills down."
Unlike traditional energy suppliers, GB Energy will not directly provide power to homes. Instead, it will invest in new renewable energy projects and work to attract private investment.
The initiative is part of Labour’s five key missions for this parliament, with a manifesto commitment to deliver long-term savings on energy bills for UK households.
