The European Union (EU) is ramping up efforts to secure €40 billion (£33.5bn) in military aid for Ukraine this year, according to a leaked document seen by Reuters.
The discussion paper, prepared by the EU’s diplomatic service, suggests that member states should contribute based on their economic capacity to ensure continued military and financial support for Ukraine.
The EU has already pledged to maximise aid efforts as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russian aggression. The latest proposal reflects ongoing discussions on how to sustain long-term military and economic assistance.
With Russia’s war showing no signs of ending, the EU is under pressure to step up funding commitments to support Ukraine’s defence and stability.
Further negotiations among EU member states will determine the final contributions toward the proposed €40bn aid package.
