Mark Carney has officially been sworn in as Canada’s new prime minister, succeeding Justin Trudeau, who formally resigned after nearly a decade in power. The ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa also saw the swearing-in of Carney’s new cabinet.
Carney, an economist and former central banker, takes office at a time of escalating tensions with the United States, particularly over tariffs and trade threats imposed by President Donald Trump.
Carney is widely expected to call a federal election before parliament resumes later this month, potentially sending Canadians to the polls as early as late April.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh acknowledged Trudeau’s service, stating:
“Whatever disagreements we have had, his love for Canada is always evident.”
Singh also highlighted the sacrifices of public service, expressing hope that Trudeau can now spend more time with his children.
Trudeau has confirmed that he will not seek re-election as an MP in the next Canadian vote.
As Carney steps into leadership, all eyes are on his strategy for managing US-Canada relations amid Trump’s aggressive trade policies.
